I grew up in Florida with my sister and two brothers in a rural community. The nearest doctor and hospital were an hour away back then. I was very close to my grandmother, Hazel, who spent most of her life on farms and who was very wise about food, plants and natural remedies. I think these two things contributed to my strong interest in holistic health and wellness.
I always wanted to be a nurse. I started as a hospital volunteer in high school, studied Nursing at Charity Hospital School of Nursing, and then eventually went back for her BSN and MSN. After the changes in the 1980's that made healthcare a big business, I found it harder and harder to work in hospitals. I wanted to spend time with my patients, not with the charts and computers. I started working in Home Health in the late eighties where I could spend time with patients and make a real difference in their health and wellbeing. After I received my BSN, I started working as a staff development manager and really enjoyed teaching my peers. This is when I found the American Holistic Nurses Association and found my tribe; people who are all about health not illness.
In 2008 I was diagnosed with cancer and I had the opportunity to integrate my holistic skills with my cancer treatment. I am convinced those skills helped me survive. Since then I have been focused on bringing my holistic health knowledge and experience out into the world to help others.
"The first thing to realize is that you are in control of your own energy. ... You can begin to use basic energy—the kind that comes from food, air, loving relationships, nature's beauty and the flow of creativity—for your own good. All these sources of energy are available to you all the time. They are part of your birthright; they connect you to the flow of life, which is constantly renewing itself."
